Talking Vision is Vision Australia Radio’s flagship program, discussing the latest news and issues from a blindness and low vision perspective.

The International Blind Sports Federation Games are coming up in late August, and in the first of a small series of interviews with athletes heading to the Games, Sam had the great pleasure of catching up with captain of the women’s blind cricket team, Julie Neumann.

Julie is a Queensland-based mum who lives with retinitis pigmentosa, and has been playing blind cricket since experiencing vision loss 15 years ago.

She speaks about how she was welcomed into the blind cricket world immediately at a point in her life when she most needed a community and somewhere to feel included.

“Losing my vision changed my life, it didn’t end it. It has actually opened up so many doors to me, I’ve met some amazing people along the way. I’ve gotten to travel the world and I’m going off again in August, and to have the coaches put their faith in me that I can lead and captain these girls, it’s such a huge honour,” Julie said.

As a captain of the first Australia women’s blind cricket team, Julie is tremendously proud to be a part of this movement in women’s sport, especially within the blind and low vision community.

“A lot of us tend to not want to participate and put ourselves out there, so I’m really looking forward to going over and putting our best foot forward, and showing the world what us Aussie girls are made of!” she said.
