Don's Party to Air this Sunday Night!
Vision Australia Radio is very excited to be airing episode one of David Williamson's iconic Don's Party this Sunday night 2 October 2011 at 8.30pm.
The play is set on the night of the 1969 Federal Election and involves a group of friends who have their hopes pinned on a change in conservative government. The play features Vision Australia Radio volunteers and was directed by long-time volunteer and local thespian Bill Charles.
Bill says that in the days before television, radio plays were very important to Australians as a main staple of entertainment. "Today every sighted person can watch TV but radio plays are valuable to those who are blind or have low vision as they can transport people to the theatre."
The station has been granted personal permission from David Williamson to produce his plays. So far VAR has produced two other Williamson Plays, Travelling North and Brilliant Lies.
Don's Party will air over the next four Sundays.
The station is currently in production with its next play, Hotel Sorrento by Hannie Rayson.
Sean Power: one of our youngest volunteers!
Sean Power is one of our youngest volunteers.
At age 18, Sean Power was Vision Australia Radio's (Kooyong) youngest volunteer and now at aged 19, although no longer the youngest, we are delighted he is still with us 12 months later.
"Volunteering here offers me so much opportunity," says Sean who has moved from being a Sunday morning technical operator to part of the youth program Don't Hold Back - a program aimed at the 18 to 30 year old listener.
"For an 18 year old a Sunday morning shift was a big commitment," says Sean. "But I got used to it and learned to be organised and still go out on Saturday nights."
While Sean enjoyed the Sundays and working with an older and varied group of people after a time he wanted more of a challenge so began volunteering for extra shifts and letting people know he was available. He jumped at the chance to be part of Don't Hold Back when the opportunity came up and the station found they had another talent behind the microphone.
Sean has since changed his studies from business to media studies and while he has always loved radio he says the volunteering has given him the confidence that media will be viable career or him. But the volunteering aspect is just as important.
"I feel my volunteer role has a purpose. Radio is very powerful and most of us take it for granted but there are people who rely on it for their main source of information," says Sean. "I really appreciate being here." And Vision Australia really appreciates Sean.
Don't Hold Back airs Thursday evenings 8.30pm and repeated Saturday night at 11pm.
Maggie Beer features on Vision Australia Radio
Maggie Beer is passionate about food.
"Seasonal produce, picked at its peak of ripeness, is the basis of everything I do - it's all about the flavour," says Maggie Beer - and that's the basis for her lively food program on Vision Australia Radio.
"For the Love of Food" sees Maggie discuss the best of what's in season, share her favourite recipes and provide a few hints and tips on managing in the kitchen.
Maggie's Aunt and Uncle went blind in the later stages of their lives and that has lead to her becoming an Ambassador for Vision Australia and joining with Vision Australia Radio to present this program.
"For the Love of Food" is part of a suite of food programs including "Healthy Tasty and Wise", from Nutrition Australia and food history - joined together in an hour of "Table Talk" by "Heard it through the Grapevine" presented by Michael Hince, former editor of The Epicurean magazine.
"For the Love of Food" with Maggie Beer airs on the first Saturday of the month on Vision Australia Radio, 1179 AM in Melbourne, and regional stations across Victoria and southern New South Wales.
Maggie's fabulous recipes from the program can now be accessed online.
