See what’s cooking at Vision Australia’s brand new Kooyong facility

13 November 2017

A cooking demonstration for people who are blind or have low vision will be one of the highlights of Vision Australia’s Discovery Day on Wednesday, November 15, at its new, state-of-the-art Kooyong office.

A major refurbishment of the Wicking Centre at Kooyong office, turning it into a showpiece of accessible design, is nearing completion, and the Discovery Day will take place within the just finished eastern wing of the building.

“This is a chance for members of the blind and low vision community and as well as eye care professionals to tour our new facilities, try new assistive technology and see a range of demonstrations aimed at keeping them informed about the supports that are available from us and through NDIS and My Aged Care,” regional manager Debbie Deshayes says.

There will be a number of activities at the event including:

  • a demonstration about how people who are blind or have low vision can remain independent in the kitchen
  • a demonstration of life-changing assistive technology and the range of services we offer that can support the blind and low vision community to live more independently
  • seminars on how to connect with and get the most out of NDIS and My Aged Care
  • details and demonstrations of the many products available in the brand new Vision Australia retail store, and
  • a discussion of the services available through the Vision Australia Library

Ms Deshayes says the Wicking Centre at Kooyong is the home base for staff who work with people who are blind or have low vision in Stonnington, Boroondara, Yarra, Glen Eira, Port Phillip, Banyule, Darebin and Manningham.

“The Wicking Centre is also home base for our clients across that diverse part of Melbourne,” she says. “We wanted to throw open the doors to let them meet our team, show them the big improvements we’ve achieved through the refurbishment and all the supports we can offer so they can live the life they choose.”
