Introduction

Quality Living Group programs enable clients to break the isolation and confidence barriers of vision loss.

In a Quality Living Group, led by a trained facilitator, members discuss common issues of home life and the attitudes of partners and friends. They also often deal with issues such as shopping, dining out, transport and using adaptive technology.

As a person who is blind or has low vision, do you:

Join a group where members discuss these issues and set the agenda to suit individual needs.

Quality Living Groups are conducted face to face at the following centres or by telephone (national) where you can participate from the comfort and security of your own home. There is no charge to participate in these groups.

Each face to face group runs for approximately four hours on a weekly basis for eight weeks. The teleconference groups also run weekly for eight weeks but have two one-hour telephone sessions a week which are run concurrently (ie 9.30 - 10.30 then 11.00 - 12.00).

What clients say about Quality Living Groups

  • "It was a relief to know I wasn't the only one in my situation. Our group was all younger people and when the program finished we decided to go do something else together so we started Ten Pin Bowling and Swish and now I have a lot of fun."

  • "Before attending this group I was pretending that my vision loss would get better. Now I feel that I have accepted more the actual situation especially because I know more about Macular Degeneration. Attending this group has helped me in communicating better with relatives and I feel more assertive in group situations."

  • "I'm not angry anymore!! I was very angry with everyone, particularly my family. Through this group I have relaxed more and learned about the effects of disempowerment and how to get back in control of my life. I feel great now - not angry anymore."

  • "I was a very sad, lonely person before but I have looked forward to Wednesday morning very much. I'm sorry it's finished, but things come to an end, don't they? I've learnt a lot. I'm a lot happier and I think I've realised that perhaps I'm not the nuisance I thought I was. Thank you Vision Australia."
