A Survivor's Guide to Braille Music Notation
"A Survivor's Guide to Braille Music Notation" has been designed by Vision Australia to teach the basic skills needed to read and write music in braille music code.
This course pre-supposes knowledge of contracted braille and a basic musicianship.
The course is suitable for adults and children (aged above 12) who are blind or have low vision and new to learning braille, and music teachers who don't know how to read braille.
The course is self-explanatory and self-corrective.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- Read and write piano music, string music and vocal music (excluding guitar chords). This knowledge would enable the student to join a choir, play and read piano and instrumental music.
- Provide a good foundation to write his/her own music.
- Study for musicianship examinations.
As its title suggests, the Survivor's Guide does not attempt to tackle the more complex aspects of writing music, such as techniques for reading musical scores.
The Guide consists of:
- A Teacher's Guide (print)
- A Student's Guide (braille)
- Musical recordings (double CD)

The Guide is available free of charge.
